About us

The international organisation for the engineering profession.

Our story

On 4 March 1968, representatives of 50 scientific and technical associations from all over the world met under the auspices of UNESCO in Paris to establish the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, an international, non-governmental organisation whose charter is to unite multidisciplinary engineering associations throughout the world.

Today WFEO brings together national engineering organisations from some 100 nations and represents more than 30 million engineers. It acts through thirteen committees and working groups, and cooperates with United Nations bodies and other international organisations.

Strategic Plan 2026–2035

The Strategic Plan provides a long-term framework to guide the Federation’s collective contribution to engineering for sustainable development. It sets a common direction for the Secretariat, Committees, Working Groups and members. Within the ten-year horizon, WFEO will define rolling two-year priority cycles, each with focused action plans.

Five strategic objectives

  1. Strengthen the role of engineering in sustainable development and global policy
  2. Advance engineering education, capacity-building and professional mobility
  3. Promote ethical, inclusive and responsible engineering practice
  4. Promote global awareness and public engagement on engineering for sustainable development
  5. Enhance the impact, effectiveness, resilience and sustainability of WFEO and its members

Our history

On 22 November 2019, at the Executive Council in Melbourne, WFEO launched a book on the Federation’s 50-year history, with a foreword from Audrey Azoulay, then Director-General of UNESCO. It traces WFEO from its founding in 1968, with a timeline of important meetings and conferences and profiles of all past presidents.
